Origin 2000 rack system and desk side unit
1996

Designed for: Silicon Graphics Inc.

Role: Senior Industrial Designer

Final designs were developed in collaboration with SGI and Taylor & Chu’s design team

Product description: The images on this page feature Silicon Graphics Inc.’s Origin 2000 super computer rack system (ganged in a parallel sequence) and the Origin 2000 desk side unit. Being the building block to the system, the desk side unit can contain up to 8 processors and may be cabled to another unit for extraordinary computing performance. The rack system allows the desk side modules to be rack mounted, and joins together with adjacent rack systems to form a massive parallel super computer featuring up to 128 processors.

Considerations:

• The team was tasked with developing a strong visual language that expresses both modularity and connectivity for Silicon Graphics' Origin 2000 brand and the super computing industry.

• Collaborated with Silicon Graphics' in-house engineering for the rack system to arrive at a solution of aluminum corner extrusions with interlocking molded ABS front covers and large vacuum formed PVC side panels.

The Origin 2000 / Onyx rack system was awarded for Industrial Design Excellence by the IDSA and Business Week in 1997.
